Why are some veneer or porcelain caps thick looking and some appear gray or bluish in color ?

Some veneers or porcelain caps look thick and "one flat color" others look gray/bluish. What veneer or porcelain is closest to the natural color of teeth and most natural? I don't want to spend a lot of money and be unhappy with the result.

All veneers and crowns are shade matched to the patients surrounding teeth. Over the years the teeth will darken from staining and just with age. The crowns or veneers don't change shades as the natural teeth do.





You also may have seen some that were badly shaded or had poor anatomy if they appeared thick. The ones that have a dull or flat appearance are porcelain fused to metal crowns, they aren't as lifelike as a full porcelain crowns or veneers.





Which ever you decide, your dentist will advise you what will be best for your individual problem. You will be allowed to try on the veneer or crown so you can see the shading and anatomy and give your approval of it prior to it being cemented into your mouth. If it's not shaded correctly, it can be returned to the lab and changed at that time.





Trust your dentist, if it's not shaded correctly to match your other teeth or the anatomy isn't exactly as that of your original teeth or how they should be, he will have them re-made correctly and to your perfection. Never accept what you aren't satisfied with since you will be the one looking at it every day for years to come.

WHEN TRADITIONAL CROWN ARE MADE THEY ALWAYS HAVE A DARK METAL BASE WHICH NEEDS TO BE COVERED MY SPECIAL STAGES OF PORCELAIN. THE ARTISTRY AND SKILL OF THE DENTAL CERAMIST (AKA DENTAL TECHNICIAN) WILL PROVE AS TO THE FINAL APPEARANCE OF THE FINAL PRODUCT.

THE UNDERLYING METAL IS A RICH GOLD COLOR IMITATING THE NATURAL COLOR OF TOOTH DENTIN.


SO WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?


WITH THE PROPER BACKGROUND COLOR IT'S MUCH EASIER TO MATCH THE NATURAL THE COLOR TO THE FINAL PRODUCT.


WITH THIS CROWN THERE IS ALSO NEVER ANY GRAY MARGINS OF THE GUM LINE.

Reply:I have a veneer and I agree that it can look "flat" in color. I had it redone years ago and it looks better. I have 2 Lumineers in the front and looks exactly like my real teeth. It's translucent and shiny. I've had friends amazed at how they couldn't even tell. Most are these day but going to a cosmetic dentist made a big difference for me. The first veneer was thick and didn't look natural. The replacement was much better. It was shinier but still flat compared to the Lumineer. But if I didn't have the Lumineer to compared to, the veneer looks like teeth. I notice it but no one seems to. We're our worse critics, lol. =) Just go to a good cosmetic dentist and ask to see pictures of their work or which ones they prefer. Good luck!
