Can you put porcelain veneers over caps and nearby real teeth?

My two front teeth are crowns and are about 28 years old. They are chipped, I was wondering if you can put porcelain veneers over them plus the fronth teeth next to them and about how much woulld that cost? My dentist put a little bit of bonding over one tooth about 12 years ago. Or, would I have to get new caps to replace them? Thanks.

You can not put veneers over crowns. You can have the crowns removed and new ones put on. Then have veneers on the teeth next to them, or crowns is that is what is necessary.

Cost varies by dentist. Even in this city. Porcelain crowns can go from $450 - $900. Veneers are usually about half that.

Check with your dentist about your options and what he/she is willing to do, and how much they charge. Go to several dentists to get different opinions and price options.
Reply:yeah i just had my front teeth done, im not sure because insurance covered mine and all dentists are differnt.

they will either gring down your teeth that are chipped or like mine, they were caps that had been on about 15 yrs they just removed them and then put the veeneers over the original tooth
Reply:While it is theoretically possible to put a veneer over an existing crown, I would not do it unless it was to "save" a really huge case where there was damage to one unit of porcelain and the other 8 or 10 were okay.

The best thing to do would be to just get new caps on the middle teeth and consider veneers for the others. Frankly, the cost of caps and veneers is usually the same anyway, so you won't be saving anything if you try to get venners over your caps.
Reply:When you had the procedure done for your crowns alot of tooth structure was taken away which would make it impossible to place veneers on those teeth.

It sounds like you need new crowns. Since you have already had this procedure done once before it will be quicker. The dentist will remove your old crowns and reprep your teeth. You will have impressions taken of your exsisting teeth for temps and an impression after the prep is complete will go to the lab.

These crowns are old and it may be time to replace them.

The price will depend on your state and the area you live in. Some labs charge more than others to fabricate crowns and this is a big factor in the price.
